Thrilling Videos of Unusual Coasters

Posted on 12:19 by Unknown
There are plenty of popular roller coaster videos on YouTube; some are of the riders and some are of the rides themselves. Recently, a very specific kind of roller coaster, the single-rail alpine coaster, has become particularly widely-spread.

A little over a week ago, David Ellis posted a video of him riding one in Austria in which he decided not to touch the breaks. It's been seen roughly 3 million times since.

Meanwhile, this 3 year old video -- also from Mieders, Austria -- suddenly spiked in popularity as well:

Not all popular videos are of the single-rail variety, of course. Earlier this year, thrillseekers may recall this POV video going viral; it was a first look at Japan's Takabisha, the world's new steepest roller coaster:

Wildest Videos from Black Friday

Posted on 12:47 by Unknown
As you may or may not have heard, things got a little dicey at some U.S. retailers on Friday as excited hordes of shoppers sought out big bargains on the busiest shopping day of the year. A number of heavily viewed videos emerged from the post-Thanksgiving chaos and made their way around the web.

This clip of a crowd rushing into an Urban Outfitters in California was seen over 600,000 times.

Meanwhile, this mayhem at a California Wal-Mart is said to have been shot moments after a woman reportedly used pepper-spray on the crowd as they devoured a pile of XBoxes. It's been seen several hundred thousand times.

At another Wal-Mart, this time in Texas, there were concerns about people getting crushed in the melee:

A much talked-about video from Arizona also spread that show's a man who was injured during an arrest (Warning: Adult language and content).

These are just a few of the crazy crowds captured on video this weekend.

Thanksgiving Revenge: Turkey Attack Videos

Posted on 08:43 by Unknown
In honor of Thanksgiving in the United States, we thought it appropriate to discuss a frightening trend that comes to mind during this holiday: turkey attack videos.

In October, this video of a news producer getting harassed by a wild turkey (with the camera rolling) became a viral hit, picking up over 450,000 views.

Meanwhile, these children decided to play bullfighter with a turkey, that is until the turkey got fed up. This clip from the Philippines just took off this week in time for the holiday:

Seriously, these turkeys are fearless. This one was captured on video in January going right after a mail truck:

If there was a whole holiday dedicated to your demise, you might be angry too. Angry enough to ruin a children's soccer game.

Happy Thanksgiving. And be safe out there.

Adventures Abroad: Oh, the Places You'll Go (on YouTube)

Posted on 07:01 by Unknown
This post was authored by Will Goodman, managing editor of CBSNews.com's The Feed, for a YouTube Trends series exploring viral video phenomena.

It's a big wide world out there. So many sites to see and people to meet. While I would recommend everyone take some time to travel and experience it for himself or herself, let's be honest: we can't all drop everything and go to Morocco. Luckily, YouTube offers us all a unique modern opportunity to take in many of these sights and sounds vicariously.

We take a trip to Turkey for our first example of the globe-trotting travel videos. What really stands out about this first video is it takes something so seemingly common as a person purchasing ice cream and transforms it into a wondrous performance. And it’s far from the only one you can find on YouTube. Just type in“Turkish Ice Cream” and you will discover a whole genre of just this particular type of showmanship in action.

And where showmanship was on display in the previous video, now we get a display of pure skill. Take something as mundane as serving up cakes to customers and see what can happen when a certain level of speed and skill are applied. This time there is no real performance by the person on display, simply someone doing their job at a level of speed and skill that is amazing to behold. If for some reason they ever did create a cake serving competition in the Olympics, I would bet money this woman would take the gold.

So where we started with showmanship and then transitioned into skill, now we’re focusing on the subject of craftsmanship. There is something hypnotizing about watching the creation of a single chess piece by hand in this video. While most sets you find in stores are now mass-produced by modern machines, you'd have to take a trip to exotic Morocco to find this kind of unique expertise. Just watch your toes!

So let’s finish this week’s column with a video that nicely sums up what we’ve seen here today with examples of showmanship, skill and craftsmanship in action abroad in this video entitled “Only In India”. And I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful upcoming Thanksgiving!

Marcel the Shell Is Back!

Posted on 08:53 by Unknown
The cute and funny "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On" -- voiced by Jenny Slate and directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp -- was one of the hit web video characters of the past year and he's just returned in a new video that's drawing lots of attention.

The original Marcel the Shell hit YouTube last October and drew over 4 million views in 2010. But the video has had a long-tail audience and it's now been seen over 12 million times:

Like many "cult classic" type clips, the original video saw lots of parodies and fan videos. Someone even wrote a theme song for Marcel:

And now Marcel has returned, just over a year later, with a sequel that's currently the most-viewed and most-shared video in the United States. It's been seen over half a million times in the past 24 hours and has been one of YouTube's top rising searches:

Citizentube has collected a series of videos from the confrontation between officers and protesters as NYPD approached and cleared the area.
